Opportunities Abound

Opportunities abound for top class fly fishing throughout the North Island of New Zealand. From vast lakes such as Lake Taupo which covers an area of 600 square kilometres to small spring creeks with gin clear water. The variety of fly fishing locations is sure to satisfy even the most discerning anglers needs.
Beautiful Rivers and Streams Access to most of the best fishing in the North Island is by 4x4 vehicle or walking through farmland or bush areas. Helicopters can be arranged to provide access to the most remote areas of the island. This form of transport can provide an exciting alternative to walking into the back country, but unlike other areas of the country it is definitely not a necessity.
Summer Seasons
Excellent fly fishing can be experienced year round in the North Island for brown and rainbow trout which average 3-4lbs in size with fish of double figures (10lbs+) not uncommon. One or two fish in the region of 15lbs + do get landed each season .

The main season runs from the 1st of October to the 30th of June. This is followed by a winter extended season running from the 1st of July to the 30th of September. During this time certain areas are closed to fishing to protect spawning fish.

Spring Fishing October – November
With the start of the new season access is restored to those waters closed for the winter season. Fish in these areas are less wary due to the absence of angling pressure. The main methods used at this time of year are up stream nymphing and wet lining, with some dry fly available towards the end of November in favorable conditions.

Summer Fishing December – March
Insect activity increases during the summer months and the trout feed readily on the surface and can be tempted with dry flies and emerger patterns. Nymphing is very productive and works well on both rivers and lakes. Good fishing can be found in most lakes where large fish cruise the margins and congregate at cool stream mouths as water tempratures rise.

Autumn Fishing April – June
The fish are in prime condition in the rivers and lakes and provide excellent sport as fish start to make their spawning migration. Nymphing and wet lining are again the order of the day. Night fishing around lake edges produces great numbers of large fish, this is the time for trophy hunting.

Winter Fishing July – September
Many rivers and lakes remain open during the winter season and fishing can be excellent targeting the great number of large well conditioned fish which migrate to spawn. Lake edges, stream mouths and rivers all offer good fishing with nymphs and deeply sunk wet flies and lures.
